Greg and Noah, a Pencil Artwork on Cigarette Paper, artist James captures the essence of intimacy and connection within gay relationships through a unique lens. Inspired by a teenager's offhand remark about a gay couple, James reflects on his teenage years when openly gay figures were scarce due to the socio-political climate influenced by Section 28. This series of drawings, skillfully executed on cigarette papers—a medium both challenging and symbolically loaded—echoes the colloquial British use of 'fag' for a cigarette while also acknowledging its derogatory connotation. These intimate drawings, rendered in pencil on cigarette papers, portray couples from James's archive of gay porn magazines, offering a distinct perspective on gay relationships. After graduating in 2002 with an MA Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, James worked in the cultural sector, before returning to a regular art practice 17-years later. Since then, he has been shortlisted for the Bridget Riley Fellowship (2023-24) and Derwent Art Prize (2022), been selected for the RA Summer Exhibition (2021), won the Mervyn Metcalf Purchase Prize at the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition (2021), and was awarded a special commendation at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize (2020). His work is held in the UK Government Art Collection and private collections in the UK, USA and China.
