Through his work he delves into the essence of the everyday by peeking through windows or vacant doorways in local establishments, as well as refashioning the identity of familiar objects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating art that reflects what he sees everyday has always been a preoccupation for Phil. As he explains,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI had this idea for ages where I\u2019d film a spot, keeping the camera dead still. Someone might be sick there or someone might propose there, or it could flood.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am more bothered with where things have happened, the spaces that things could happen inside of rather than the actual happenings themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst Phil\u2019s art underscores the significance of the stage above its actors, much of his inspiration is derived from human endeavour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very soon into our conversation, he explains how the music he listened to growing up not only provided a backdrop to his daily life but also played a significant role in shaping the art he created.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bands like Blur, The Jam &amp; The Kinks. All Britpop greats who used a combination of humorous, satire-laden lyrics and unpolished sounds to broach many of the social, cultural and even political issues of their day. In the same way his favourite bands used the medium of music\u00a0 to provide a sort of cultural commentary, he uses art as a means of better understanding his own reality. He can show if it is a particularly muggy day or if it has just rained. The places he depicts feel very familiar too &#8211; like streets I\u2019d walk down on a daily basis.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using these techniques Shaw perfectly renders the way streetlights bounce off wet pavement, how this reflects back in a window on a particularly grey day, or even the feeling of warm, heavy air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of his works depict the streets of Coventry &#8211; a city whose suburbs are emblematic of many regions in the UK, marked by the prevalence of Brutalist structures stemming from a surge of post-war reconstruction projects happening across the country from the 1950s through to the 80s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If George Shaw captures the exterior of everyday life, Patrick Caulfield, whose techniques have\u00a0 had a big impact on Phil, brings the focus inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaulfield is a big influence in terms of how I present the subject, especially in how he takes a similar photographic approach.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is clear to see Phil\u2019s affinity with Caulfield\u2019s prints and paintings. Whether it\u2019s in his application of bold colours on almost photorealistic yet consistently simple interior scenes. Even the mere uttering of this hallowed institute will cause many people in their twenties or thirties to shudder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this is a club with a long history, having been visited by generations of West Midland-ers. It is an iconic building (and wall of faces). As well as a vital step in every local Gen-X\/Millenial\/Gen-Z\u2019s coming-of-age story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phil struggled with the decision to create the piece in what is, an age-old struggle for artists juggling commissions with their own art practice. He felt as if he was plucking the Birmingham artist\u2019s equivalent of \u2018low hanging fruit\u2019. Viewers were transported back to old memories just by looking at Phil\u2019s Snobs, with its windows crowded with loud club posters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phil\u2019s portfolio doesn\u2019t stop at buildings. Some of Phil\u2019s more recent, and equally eye-catching works are inspired by tattoo flashsheets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One that initially caught my eye featured a Tunnocks Caramel Wafer &#8211; a chocolate caramel snack created in 1947.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0You can still find it in the snack aisle of any supermarket today, in what looks like the same wrapping it&#8217;s always been in &#8211; an iconic red and gold striped foil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, within Phil\u2019s print the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer is no longer a chocolate bar. Rebranded, it sits beside its newfound comrades a cafetiere, a candlestick &amp; a lucky cat (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maneki-neko<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), amongst other objects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-938 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cosimo.art\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/General_Blimey_Art_Birmingham.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cosimo.art\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/General_Blimey_Art_Birmingham.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/cosimo.art\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/General_Blimey_Art_Birmingham-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/cosimo.art\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/General_Blimey_Art_Birmingham-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cosimo.art\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/General_Blimey_Art_Birmingham-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1536px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1536\/2048;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recolouring the objects in a dappled, inky blue, Phil relinquishes them from their original function. They can now be anything &#8211; part of a tattoo flash-sheet, a collection of postage stamps, a Lego construction manual or what Phil refers to as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018the ingredients of your day\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s through his <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRear Window-inspired\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approach to buildings, looking beyond their initial flatness to peer into a window or catch the last glimpse of a shadow rounding a corner. Or in his collections of everyday objects, regrouped and repurposed with an identity that exceeds their functionality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phil\u2019s art seamlessly balances between\u00a0 the realms of the familiar and the unique.
