What is Cosimo?

We’re more than just another online art gallery.

Cosimo is where artists can connect with and sell their work directly to others who love what they do.

What's with the name Cosimo?

Cosimo de Medici has often been hailed as the father of the Renaissance.

He lived in medieval Florence and was a patron of many great artists including Fra Angelico and Donatello.

Cosimo supported them financially and created an environment in which they could flourish.

We're here to do the same today.

What is our vision?

We need a new Renaissance.

For too long, the art world has felt and been closed off.

High fees, snooty galleries, and complicated lingo have all contributed to an inaccessible environment that alienates far too many.

We got this impression. even as people working in the industry ourselves.

But we believe the world would be a better place with more artists and art in it, so more people can enjoy the benefits it brings.

That's why we built our platform to give artists the tools they need to pursue their passion easily, affordably, and sustainably.

What's more, we've made it easier than ever for them to connect with and sell directly to their customers - with no hidden commission fees.

For Artists

Who can sell on Cosimo?

Cosimo is a space for artists of all kinds to showcase and sell their work. Whether you’re a painter, printmaker, sculptor or photographer – we’re here to help.

Anyone can create a profile and sell their work.

All we require is that you are the artist who made the work that you’re selling.

There are no drawn-out or complicated application processes.

It’s easy to sign up, so your work can be listed and ready to sell in a matter of minutes.

We don’t believe that we should be in a position to dictate what is or isn’t ‘good enough' for our site...

Instead, we believe that it’s the artists’ customers who are best suited to make that decision.

Who shouldn’t sell on Cosimo?

Primarily, Cosimo is designed to serve creators who are would be best categorised as ‘Fine Artists’.

This means we do not allow the sale of ‘craft’ items through the site.

The distinction can sometimes be a difficult one to draw, so if you are unsure, please do get in touch.

Ultimately, if we don’t think you are the right fit for us, we’ll do our best to help you find another solution!

While we look to be accommodating to as many artists as possible, a full list of what can and cannot be sold on Cosimo can be found in our terms and conditions.

We retain the right to deactivate any listings that we deem not to fit in with these guidelines.

You don’t charge commission fees?

Working with artists, we’ve seen first-hand the impact that commission fees can have on both artists and their buyers.

Sometimes being as much as 50%, they can have a huge impact on the profitability of an artist’s practice.

In the digital era things can be done differently.

With many artists abandoning traditional galleries (both on and offline) and selling directly to their buyers, we wanted to give them the tools to do so easily and securely – with integrated messaging and payment systems.

How much does it cost to sell on Cosimo?

Instead of charging commission fees, we charge our artists a simple subscription to access our platform, exhibit their work and then directly to their collectors.

Plans start from as little as £4 a month, with packages including exclusive community access, partner discounts (including framing and art supplies), 1-2-1 mentoring, and personalised domains.

When are subscriptions charged?

You can choose to be billed monthly, six-monthly or annually depending on what works best for you.

Our six-monthly plans come with a 10% discount and our annual plans are reduced by 20%.

How do I get paid for sales?

We work with Stripe as our payment partner.

As a result, when you create an account with us you will be asked to either connect your existing Stripe account (if you have one) or create a new one.

What is Stripe?

Stripe is a third-party payment software that ensures all transactions are safe and secure. Artists need to set up a Stripe account and verify it before they can receive payments.

I have sold a work, but still haven’t received my payment.

Make sure you have set up your Stripe account and verified it. If this is your first sale, the payment can take a little while to come through as Stripe may still be doing security checks. Ultimately though, this keeps us all safe.

What is the Studio+ Community?

We believe that every great art movement in history has emerged out of a strong community of artists, supporting each other, and pushing things to new levels.

That’s why we started our Studio+ Community.

Our partners at Wondr have helped up to create a virtual space where Studio+ members can share their work, ideas and generally help each other through their respective journeys.

Members with access to Studio+ will also get exclusive access to newsletters, resources, and artist meetups, as well as getting discounts on any of our events – from exhibitions to artist seminars.

What is included in your exclusive partner discounts?

Cosimo have partnered with other businesses, to offer you exclusive discounts on everything you might need as an artist with the likes of framers, art supplies and even coffee companies.

Everything you need to keep making art – from a caffeine boost to a canvas – we’ve got you covered.

What are Cosimo Events?

Events include artist seminars and exhibitions.

Cosimo runs three temporary exhibitions throughout the year featuring our artist’s work. This allows art lovers the chance to see the work in person and get a real sense of its magic!

What does a personal mentor do?

On the Growth Plan you will be assigned an expert to mentor you in 1-2-1 sessions for an hour every month.

They can help give you tailored advice on whatever you might be struggling with, be it keeping track of your finances, promoting your work, or optimising your social media.

Cosimo wants to help you grow!

Who can see my artwork?

Once you have uploaded an artwork you can choose to activate or deactivate it at any time.

When an artwork is active, it will be live on the site and visible to anyone visiting either your specific page or the website more generally.

Can I link to my own website?

Please do!

We have a place in your artist profile where you can specifically link your website and any other social channels you might use.

Can I create my own Promo Codes?

Promo Codes can be a great way to reward previous buyers and encourage new collectors of your work.

In your Seller Panel you'll be able to easily add and edit promo codes as and when you need them.

Do you use Promo Codes?

Yes. From time to time, we will run promotions in order to attract new customers and ultimately help you to sell your work.

However, we won’t ever offer more than 15% off any of your artworks.

How can I increase my chances of sales?

We have a complete guide for our artists to help them get the most out of their membership here.

In short though: engage with the community, share your page, and regularly update your profile.

Why can’t I upload an image of my artwork?

You can! We encourage you to upload multiple images of your art so buyers can get a real sense of it before purchasing.

If you are having trouble with this is might be your image size is too big – we have a limit of 1MB. You can easily compress your image and try again.

Can I get help with shipping my artworks?

Artists are responsible for shipping their own artworks. You can set your own shipping costs that vary by artwork size or factor the shipping into the initial artwork price.

Can I cancel my membership?

Here at Cosimo, we know things can be precarious as an artist. If you need to cancel your membership and have already paid in advance, we will try our best to help. Just contact us on the support page.

Can I upgrade my membership?

Our memberships are flexible, and you can upgrade or downgrade your plan to suit your needs and budget at the time.

For Buyers:

Can I get personalised help finding art that is right for me?

Yes. We have a FREE art consultation service. Just follow this link and tell us some more information about you, and what you’re looking for and our team will handpick some suggestions for you.

How can I narrow down my art search?

If you have an idea of what art you are interested in, but want to narrow down your search, start by selecting the type of art you are looking for from the Buy Art dropdown menu.

You can then filter your search to get even more specific. Try filtering by style, price or colour.

I’ve purchased an artwork; will it arrive framed and ready to hang?

Each of our artists sells their work directly to you. As such there is no standardised framing process. Some artworks will be listed as framed, whilst some will be unframed.

If you would like yours to arrive framed, try contacting the artist as many will be happy to oblige.

How long will it take to receive my order?

Artists are responsible for shipping their works to you. Their profile should have an estimated time, or let you know how long it will take for them to dispatch the order.

This may vary depending on distance but be sure to communicate with them for more information, or to tell them you need it by a certain date.

Why haven’t I got an email verification link?

If you haven’t received a link to verify your email, be sure to check your spam folders. If you still can’t find it get in touch with us via customer support.

Can I change my profile from Art Lover to Artist?

Yes! If you want to start listing your own work on Cosimo, you can get an artist profile by subscribing to one of our artist plans. Find more information about what plans are available here.

Can I return an artwork if I am not happy with it?

We hope that you are happy with the art you have purchased on Cosimo and advise you to look carefully and be sure before buying.

If you’d like to return an order, contact the artist, as they are responsible for packaging and shipping their own work, meaning you deal with the artists directly.

In the unlikely instance issues do arise, we will work with our artists and buyers to resolve them where possible and will not hesitate to remove artists that do not fulfil orders.
