Kuya Carlo (He/Him, b. 1996, Manila, Philippines) is a multidisciplinary artist and body image activist who is currently based in Birmingham, UK. With his vibrant, fantasy-like aesthetic and bold take on challenging societal norms, Kuya Carlo is becoming an exciting figure to watch on the queer arts scene. Known for his kawaii-inspired visual language, Kuya Carlo’s captivating artwork transports viewers to a queer utopia where body positivity and inclusivity reign supreme. He strives to redefine the traditional beliefs of masculinity and attractiveness within the gay community and beyond through bright pastel colour palettes, rounded silhouettes, and glossy elements. By depicting queer, chubby men of colour as his main subject matter, he defies archaic ideals whilst showcasing a new vision of beauty.
