Artist Profile – Philip Jones aka J1’s, is a contemporary artist from Birmingham, U.K. In preparing for each session, J1 first begins with a short contemplation often by singing HU (www.hearHU.org). J1’s style can best be described as Contemporary Spiritual work that endeavours to capture the moment and manifest Divine Love through Light and Sound. These two aspects of the Holy Spirit are reflected in the boldness of colour and the use of light to capture a feeling or vibration that resonates from the canvas. Often, abstract shapes and flows of colour form a background landscape that gradually reveals more detail. In other, more minimalistic work, colour and shape represent a spiritual or religious element. Yellow for example, signifies Heaven, whilst blue depicts the Holy Spirit. The shape of a sphere denotes Soul where-as the Blue Pearl specifically represents the Mahanta; a state of consciousness that acts as a bridge between the human and Divine. Working mainly with acrylics, the fast drying process allows for an intense, continuous flow. J1 uses the blank canvass as a pallet, directly applying and mixing paint with the confidence and swiftness of a jazz musician who mixes harmonies. Each piece has a life of its own and is composed of feelings, actions and a combination of colours in a very fluid and intuitive form. Like jazz, each session has an improvised and unexpected outcome making the Artwork unique and one of a kind.
