Ever since I was a young child I was fondly interested in Art. I loved how the colours combined on the palette and settled into a beautiful piece of artwork on a canvas. The strong feelings a masterpiece could evoke in a person is what inspired me to become an artist, as I too hope to one day create pieces that could move a person’s heart through the study of Visual Arts.
To help me build the foundation skills and knowledge in art, I studied GCSE Art and and am currently studying IB Art at Standard Level. During the course of my studies, I was able to study various kinds of artists from different eras, understand their use of medium and the importance of the story behind the art. Through the course I learned how to create compositions using an assortment of mediums such as photographs, acrylic paint, oil pastels, willow charcoal, pencils and how to manipulate them using technical skills such as drawing, sketching, color blending and using the manipulation of light sources. We even had the opportunity to explore claywork and create sculptures by combining mixed mediums such as twigs, foam board, glue guns and paint. The subject I love to work with most is nature, predominantly flowers and leaves using oil pastels and acrylic paint. This is because they are full of wonderful colors and to me, are considered the most beautiful things in nature. One of my biggest accomplishments was when my painting of a flower using oil pastels and paint was chosen to be displayed as a centerpiece in the Learning Support Department in my school. For my internal assessment in maths, I researched on the auction prices for Van Gogh Paintings. I learned currency conversion, understanding auction prices and what makes people interested in buying the art. This has helped me understand the value of art, and what its worth. I am studying GCSE English which has helped me develop my communication skills, especially in my writing.
As I am passionate about art, I decided to join the pottery activity during CAS week. I was able to improve my skills in wheel throwing, making different styled sculptures and manipulating clay. I also joined the art club to improve my skills in art and spend more time improving my art pieces. Aside from art, I also enjoy playing music - especially the violin. I have joined the school orchestra yearly, which has shown my ability to be committed, dedicated and a team-player as it requires diligence and cooperative skills to work as a group and perform a piece of music. This year, I have challenged myself by branching my musical talent and joining the acapella group. By being part of the sopranos groups, I have grown my sense of responsibility as I have to make work together to succeed to ensure there is great harmony.
In conclusion, I believe that I would be a great candidate for your university as I am dedicated, committed and passionate about art. My international mindedness and ability to in perceiving art from multiple perspectives would be a unique asset that I could bring to the university.
