My name is Nick Coupland and I am an artist from East Yorkshire.
I am self taught and receive inspiration from the urban landscape around us, particularly the more maligned aspects of post-war architecture.
I find that the solid forms, sharp shadows and weathered texture of Brutalism creates a depth of painting that is hard to find with other more celebrated forms of architecture. My paintings hope to inspire a feeling of interest rather than comfort, that their dark recesses can be explored in safety. That the striking attributes of these buildings can be viewed with intrigue rather than suspicion.
I mainly work in acrylic, pen or pencil- my pen drawings focusing on detail whilst my colour pieces explore shade.
