I am Ros Bason, an artist dedicated to uplifting and empowering the everyday experiences that shape our lives. My work, which encompasses drawings, paintings, and sculptures, often reflects social commentary through the lens of abstraction. I draw inspiration from the minutiae of life—observations of people, animals, and local environments—capturing these moments in a frenetic, instinctive manner.
My creative process begins with recording spontaneous thoughts, overheard conversations, and humorous anecdotes in my notebook. These sketches evolve into layered paintings that incorporate references from literature, art history, and pop culture. I utilise materials such as old book covers, salvaged wood, and various supports, applying pigment, acrylic, and oil paint in an organic, intuitive fashion. Each piece becomes a dialogue, where ambiguity invites viewers to engage and interpret the work in their own way.
I have exhibited my work in notable venues, including solo shows at The Shoppery and Daisy Laing Gallery, and participated in significant group exhibitions like ‘Unstuck – connecting through collage’ and ‘There’s No Other Way’ in London. My work is held in private collections, and I continually seek to explore themes of imperfection, humour, and pathos.
Ultimately, I aim to leave viewers with a smile, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences and interpretations of the world around them.
