Sonya Iwasiuk | Artist Statement

Sonya Iwasiuk is a Vancouver-based mixed-media artist celebrated for her distinctive approach to combining materials like hand-rusted steel, plaster, and gold leaf. Drawing inspiration from her childhood in Northern Alberta and her Ukrainian heritage, Iwasiuk’s art explores themes of memory, history, and identity, often using found objects to tell stories of resilience and connection to place.

Her studio, located in the 1000 Parker Street building, is not just a creative space but also a hub for artistic learning. Through her Vancouver Art Classes, Iwasiuk offers an opportunity for others to explore mixed-media techniques, whether through weekly painting classes, private lessons, or team-building workshops. Her classes encourage students to tap into their own creativity while mastering innovative art practices.

Iwasiuk’s work has been showcased in galleries across Western Canada, including Elevation Gallery in Canmore, Effusion Gallery in Invermere, and Tutt Street Gallery in Kelowna. Additionally, her public art installations for Vancity branches in New Westminster and Maillardville highlight her influence on Vancouver’s cultural landscape.
