Wind is one of my series of eight acrylic paintings on wood panel, inspired by the ancient Daoist practice of I Ching, which is comprised of eight trigrams, or nature elements, heavy with symbolic meaning. Each trigram is painted as if encapsulated within its own realm, separate from its seven sister elements, to appreciate it in its singular, raw, elemental beauty. Although there are recognisable motifs of natural forms in some of my I Ching paintings, they are predominantly abstract. All of the paintings in this series employ the compositional structure of a circle within a square, echoing the traditional simplicity of the Yin-Yang symbol.
