Part of the 'Seeing Sounds: moments visualised through music' collection. A body of work where each piece is inspired by a different song. Worked on whilst listening to the music and channelling the emotions from it, each painting shows how I view, perceive and feel every individual song, creating visual representations of each track using paint on canvas.
Inspired by 'State of Mind' by Goldie
When I first head this track in 1996. it was a time when I was so unsure of myself - part child, part adult, in that stage of life where you’re trying to find yourself and what you believe in. I was really searching for solid things to hold onto, to find my identity in the world.
This track and subsequent painting feels like a full circle moment, as I let go of past shame, accept the things that happened but feel like I can move on ‘I’ve played the game and felt the pain and I am stronger now.’
The keys that are instrumental to this song, for me, feel like they’re cascading down from top to bottom, with with bass grounding the track and vocals soaring above it. It feels like transparent sounds are wrapping themselves in and around and then the harp gently trickles down giving it another layer.
This painting was a real letting go experience for me. Letting go of what I think people will like, letting go of expectations, letting go of worrying about if anyone will like it or like me. Its a piece that started as one thing then became another, me literally turning it on its head when it wasn’t working. Being unapologetic with the mark making and colour palette - this is me being unadulterated in my artwork and doing it purely for the joy of it....’I feel no shame, nothing to erase, I wouldn’t change single day that lies before me.’ Amen to that.
