Part of the 'Seeing Sounds: moments visualised through music' collection. A body of work where each piece is inspired by a different song. Worked on whilst listening to the music and channelling the emotions from it, each painting shows how I view, perceive and feel every individual song, creating visual representations of each track using paint on canvas.
Inspired by 'Airplane' by Cleo Sol.
What I love best about this track is the space in it - Cleo Sol isn’t afraid to let each part speak for itself. The gentle guitar and soft drumbeat allows for her voice and lyrics to really sink in.
‘Airplane’ firstly makes me think of myself as a child. Painfully shy and not sure of myself at all, as I grew up I became stronger and more self assured. I’d like to go back to my 10 year old self and tell her to not worry, ‘you will find your power, little bird wait.’
Secondly, this is a love song to my children. Being a mother is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, you’re desperately trying to guide your children in the right direction while outside winds and storms threaten to knock them off course ‘little bird don’t cry, know you hurt your wing when you fell outside.’
This song at its heart encapsulates how I would like my children to perceive their home and parents - as a safe space. Bad things will happen, but with us at their side, holding tight, dusting down and building up, hopefully they will find the right way - their way - whatever that may be.
Within the painting parts reveal themselves, colours merge and join wrapping around each other. There’s an ethereal, soft feeling that’s reflected in the colour palette and mark making, a light, airy and spacious feel just like the song.
