Part of the 'Seeing Sounds: moments visualised through music' collection. A body of work where each piece is inspired by a different song. Worked on whilst listening to the music and channelling the emotions from it, each painting shows how I view, perceive and feel every individual song, creating visual representations of each track using paint on canvas.
Inspired by 'Lost Kingdoms' by Nubya Garcia.
The only instrumental track of my journey through sound, this is from the brilliant jazz saxophonist Nubya Garcia.
The way this song builds is so beautiful. The melodic saxophone starts with the double bass adding a layer before the drums and then keys come in. The track settles before building again trumpets adding another level of sound. Its so vibrant, bold and beautiful and all at once seemingly from the past and the future. And the ending! I love a track with an emphatic finish - its so confident and unapologetic.
My dad and I had a shared love of Miles Davis - I was always fascinated with how he used the trumpet as his voice and I feel like Garcia does the same with the sax. She uses it as her voice, soaring high and going low, becoming gentle and quiet then loud and brash when she wants emphasis.
I always feel such absolute joy when I hear this track, it really transports me and I wanted the painting to have this visceral feeling of bold energy and blended layers, of confidence and exuberance all at once.
