Part of the 'Seeing Sounds: moments visualised through music' collection. A body of work where each piece is inspired by a different song. Worked on whilst listening to the music and channelling the emotions from it, each painting shows how I view, perceive and feel every individual song, creating visual representations of each track using paint on canvas.
Inspired by 'Knocks me off my feet' by Stevie Wonder.
I've always been fascinated by lyrics, how a songwriter can convey a multifaceted feeling with a seemingly simple lyric. A good lyric can have you seeing the whole story in your imagination all whilst giving you goose bumps.
Stevie Wonder manages to take me to the place that he’s singing about in ‘Knocks me off my feet’....‘I see us in the park, strolling the summer days of imaginings in my head’ before ‘And words from our hearts, told only to the wind, felt even without being said.’
I properly discovered the Songs in the Key of Life album from which this song features when I moved to London in 2005, and hearing this song takes me back to the little flat share I had in Tulse Hill, south London. I didn’t have a job to start with and was completely out of my depth in a city I didn’t know, with no friends or family nearby. I had just got together with Marcel and this song, along with him felt like an anchor for me, a beautiful, understated love song that helped me to feel grounded.
For me the song has an other worldly feel to it, a place where you can escape to in your imagination, holding hands with your love, strolling in the park, not needing to speak to know that you love each other, faces raised to the sunshine in contentment.
