Features of cutting the umbilical cord:
The inspiration behind this independent black woman art is to capture the divine and regal essence of a black woman, even in the midst of emotional turmoil. Drawing from the Hindu God Brahma, the central figure embodies the societal image of a strong and independent black woman. The multiple heads in the background represent her vulnerability, challenging the prevailing societal stereotypes and serving as a reminder of our shared humanity. Underneath the layered background, one can find one of her many letters, composed during a period of separation anxiety from her lover. The words "DON'T KILL ME" emphasize the emotional strain she experienced during that time. The artist deliberately leaves the interpretation of the piece open to the viewer. Similar to Basquiat, Babypulp employs the crown motif over the word "ME" not only to celebrate black women as royalty but also to underscore that they deserve love and protection, regardless of societal expectations.
