China in 1988 had buses and lorries but, outside Beijing, there were few cars. Bicycles were the main means of personal transport. At times main roads would have a cotinuous stream of cyclists up to five abreast in each direction. To cross the road one just had to walk slowly across the flow and the cyclists would steer round you. This painting based on a snapshot in Datong.
