I work with actions that are based on a combination of rules and spontaneity, this inspires a shift in myself and the work that I make. One minute, I am in the mode of a builder where I must follow meticulous and calculated actions. The next minute, I am free-flowing, integrating random actions to the materials that I am working with.
The mortar in this piece is not only made up of old broken bits of mortar taken from the building site, it has an awkward stance, which is halfway between structure and disorder or for that matter freedom.
I think this artwork displays an interesting balance between disciplined craftsmanship and the unpredictability of abstract expression.
