Imogen Morris

Hand-threaded portrait art. Edition of three, two available. I am influenced by the traditional craft of hand-embroidery but my style of work puts a contemporary spin on threadwork. My method of making consists of wrapping thread around nails which pinpoint the contours of the face to build up a mesh-like form made up of triangles. I build up layers and layers of these triangles to detail the subjects' features and create depth to the image. I portray women as my subjects, specifically those who are particularly inspirational in the arts. Those that have been ground-breaking in their field. I make portraits that depict the character behind the features. My work is both bold but fragile. While the triangular forms in the subject’s face are strong and harsh, they contrast with the delicacy in the materiality of the thread itself. The accurate portrayal of the face combined with the depth of the nails creates a sense of character in my subjects’ face. The artwork is made to order and is handmade using nail and thread. Therefore each individual edition won’t look exactly alike, and may differ slightly from the photo, but will accurately portray the subject's face.
The artwork will be packed by Imogen Morris, and orders are typically shipped within 48 hours of being accepted.

Imogen graduated from Kingston University in Fine Art in 2013, & after taking a few years out to focus on working with young people, has recently returned to exploring her art practice. Imogen has always enjoyed hand-embroidery as a way to relax but after getting some recognition, decided to pursue threadwork seriously. Imogen makes portraits made out of thread - it is as if she draws her subjects with thread. Imogen likes to combine thread with nails, creating a mesh-like form out of triangles to build up her subjects' features & create depth to the image.
